Leaving 2021 behind and looking ahead with a new team of fresh minds and new ideas. Getting rid of old products and concepts such as the Habitat rollup. The focus shifts to the Habitat application rather than the infrastructure with unnecessary overhead and complexities.
Habitat Rollup Shutdown 🛬
As announced on the 03rd of January, the Habitat Rollup is not running on Mainnet anymore. Rollup depositors and users can “Exit” their funds if they need deposited tokens on the Ethereum Mainnet.
The HBT Token has no further utility and can remain on the Rollup Bridge Contract. The Snapshot clarifying all HBT token-holdings has been taken in December - please save the gas for other actions like our upcoming relaunch and airdrop of the new token.
If you have important funds on the Rollup or have minted your own Virtual-ERC 20, you can “Exit” them in the Account Overview:
Use the dropdown and search for your token or paste the contract address, the “Withdrawals” box offers a button and shows all funds “Ready to Exit”.
This marks the end of Habitat v1 and the initial first chapter of our journey towards better DAO-tooling in the Ethereum space. Thank you for joining the ride, we just getting started!
New Team Structure ✨
As you might have seen on discord and telegram, our tech lead Pinkiebell has left the team. This came as a surprise for the core team as well as the community. Thankfully members of the community stood up to take his and many more positions. The Habitat team is growing.
The remaining Genesis Team:
MaxK & Vi¢tor
The new team members and core contributors:
TJ - Core Team with Front End and BizDev skills
marcocastignoli- Smart Contract Dev
roleengineer - Smart Contract Dev
vane.eth - Community Management and Socials
+ external contributors and bounty hunters
To finance first bounties and rates Habitat is in touch with our long friend and partner LeapDAO. A grant request is ongoing and the team will inform the community about any updates on this matter.
Habitat v2 - Working with Diamonds 💎
The initial vision to easily kickstart a DAO with your own token and voting mechanism is still in the making. To help achieve this goal the team is researching deeply into a promising EIP - the Diamond Standard.
More background on this design decision: Diamond Contracts are easy to upgrade and to deploy. They contain facets, which contain the core functionalities from each DAO, e.g.:
DAO Facet
Token Facet
Staking Facet
Diamonds provide a lot of flexibility for DAOs and the EIP2535 is getting adopted by some fantastic teams already - going forward it should only be easier to onboard Developers and DAOs to explore the flexibility of this EIP in a Governance/DAO context.
Some projects already use the Diamonds, you can check them here:
https://louper.dev/
Habitat is moving away from “building everything ourselves” to “let’s use an upcoming framework and make it even better” - all to the pleasure of users and devs.
The research within the Habitat crew goes on and once settled, Habitat can provide more insights on the pros and cons when deciding to launch a DAO with Habitat and the “Diamond Standard”.
The author of this EIP is Nick Mudge, who has been a great help for us exploring the possibilities and wrapping our heads around the code.
If you like to dive into the technical details, here is the full EIP-2535.
