Community Update #23 - New Learnings and Feature Outline
Introducing a fresh Toolbox for DAO Builders across networks
Hi frens, with this new update Habitat is able to add to its v2 scope and put up new functionalities and setups to the feature list. Habitat is taking on a new path, rather than building its own rollup, Habitat adapts by using existing scaling technology and supporting DAOs and projects within their native networks.
Catch up on the previous insights on Multi-sig Setups across Ethereum Networks and learn about the new direction Habitat is taking, go read our last update :)
Beyond the technicals, let's take a moment and explore the first examples of DAO setups enabled by Habitat v2:
What is possible with Habitat v2? 🤺
The starting point is the classic Multi-sig setups which are widely used in the DAO space. Habitat v2 will provide an alternative interface for the Gnosis Safe. Think of it as a frontend extended version with transaction templates and easier data handling within the safe.
The magic happens when these safes are combined with token voting extensions, adaptable to the communities and their respective token identifiers in the form of ERC20 or ERC721. Multi-sig signers get replaced by on-chain voting mechanisms.
When assembled in the correct manner, we can think of the following scenarios:
Funding Allocation, e.g. Constitution DAO, PleasrDAO, FeistyDogeNFD, etc.
People can pool together funds inside a treasury, mint an associated governance token and decide on how to distribute the funds. DAOs could use separate treasuries for separate operations and funding goals, all within the same community.
NFT Governance for Communities, e.g. BAYC, Cool Cats, Sup Ducks, etc.
NFT communities can use their collection NFTs as a governance token to have a common identifier for shared treasuries and multi-sigs. This can help to govern decisions and strategies for the dev team, servers, guilds and ecosystems.
Governance Tokens and optional Launchpad Functionalities, e.g. YAM, YFI, etc.
Projects will be able to choose how to bootstrap and setup their initial launch and distribution. DAOs can use fixed-price auctions to collect funds and connect vesting schedules to the distribution or redemption.
Active communities can emulate their workflows and discover advantages with possible new ones. Habitat v2 will feature default modules, but any logic can be put into module codes which are free to be designed by other community-members and buidlers.
Habitat identified Delegation as a key component for existing DAOs (e.g. Gitcoin, ENS, Uniswap) which already need to scale and can’t execute all decision-making to all token-holders directly. Stewards or Delegates can help to create a forum for opinions.
Where to deploy the Habitat App? 🪆
For the upcoming launch of v2 and the essential preparations, the community will need to signal their preference for the first deployment of Habitat v2.
Some Considerations 📚
Recent developments in the Optimism Ecosystem show that users can expect a new wave of launches after whitelisting their deployments and achieving the proposed "EVM-Equivalence".
zkSync recently updated the timeline for smart contract support and showcased a Uniswap App deployed on zkSync. Some more patience is necessary here.
Arbitrum and other projects are all keeping their own challenges as we explore unchartered territories and networks will have their potential drawbacks.
The genesis team already had a closer look on possible options and discussed with special regards to security for users and the application.
Result: Rollups > Sidechains
